The Elyminians called Erice Iruka; the Punics named it
Erech; the Greeks and the Romans Eryx. Centuries of
history and myth make Mount Erice a fascinating place
famous for its cobbled streets and medieval habitation.
For centuries Erice – which was called Gebel Hamed by
the Muslims, and Monte San Giuliano by the Normans – has
been a place of love; with the Castle of Venus (PAGE 15)
in which legend says that during his voyage Aeneas
stopped by here to give homage to his Goddess mother.
One can also visit the Elyminian-Punic walls; the Chiesa
Madre; the Balio Garden, and the municipal museum “A.
Cordici”. There is also the Cultural Scientific Centre
“Ettore Majorana” where seminars and meetings attended
by the most important scientists of the world take place
throughout the year. |

and therefore it still remains a real natural paradise,
with a rugged and enchanting landscape and a crystal sea.
It is also well known for its archaeological sites
characterised by the caves which can be reached by a

Alceste, son of the Trojan Egesta, who hosted Aeneas

the Doric-style Temple, the Hellenistic Theatre, and the
remains of a Sanctuary probably of Elyminian rituals,
